Gidey smashes world half marathon record in Valencia

Today, the world 5000m and 10000m record holder Letesenbet Gidey took on the challenge of beating Ruth Chepnegetich’s global mark of 64:02 in her half marathon debut. With no major marathons happening this weekend (which feels a bit strange now), this fast course gave Gidey the perfect opportunity to beat the world record.

Competing in the same city where Gidey broke the 5000m world record only last year,  she set off at a quick pace, passing 10km in 29:45. The third-fastest clocking in history for the distance. This incredible pace was maintained, cruising through the next 5k in 14:44, taking her to 15k in 44:29, already 1 minute inside the the world record time. Giving her plenty of leg room to ensure a world record time.

Gidey crossed the line in a staggering 62:52, shaving over a minute off the previous record. Recently joining NN Running team, Gidey's goal is to break the marathon world record and win an Olympic gold medal. At such a young age, she has already achieved amazing milestones, and we believe Gidey will go on to smash her goals.
